About Jerry Hock
PoleVaultHigher.com is a website dedicated to helping pole vaulters of all ages and skill levels improve on their performance. Pole Vault Higher.com is a website that encourages fellowship among all pole vaulters and the sharing of information. Pole Vault Higher.com is hosted by former All-American and Masters vaulter, Jerry Hock. Hock is well known for his illustrations of the pole vault that he drew for the late Dr. Richard V. Ganslen's, Mechanics of the Pole Vault , posters 1980-1989.
March is just around the corner and most vaulters are starting outdoor practice. Ashleigh Culpepper from Franklin HS, North Carolina finished second in the indoor state meet at Chapel Hill last weekend. She had a pole DQed by Eric Morrell who was officiating the event. Clearly there was no label on the old Altis pole. We all know that Ashleigh will vault really high this year as a sophmore. She leads the state 123A's at 10'.
I was able to pass my test and be certified as a National Level USATF Official. Thanks to all the friends who sent letters of recommendation on my behalf. Mike Holloway, Danny Williamson, Alan Stissell, Will Freeman, Todd Postlmayr.
My trip to Gainesville for the indoor meet was a rough start. I got a cold on the day before and the vault took 12 hours to run off. By the time the masters started we were all very tired and all preformed poorly, except for Charlie Polhamus who surprised everyone with a 10'10" vault and 3 good tries at the 65 year old age group WR 11'5"
For everyone who has been asking about my son Kitt Hock, he is 25 years old now. He did not pole vault after age 10 when he threatned the age group record vaulting about 9'6". These days he is a hard working professional race car driver. He drives a Nisson Skyline sponsored by Vision Motorsports. He is a Drift car driver although he also does some drag racing. He was featured on Speedvision last year in a race from Denver. I enjoy going to his races and seeing him compete. I am amazed by the popularity of these drift races and the amount of money it costs to participate. Kitt has been lucky to find sponsors who believe in his talent. He has several videos on youtube if you google Kitt Hock youtube video drift you can see him in action.
I am looking forward to another fun year vaulting this season. After last years World Championshp I don't know what I can do to top that but there is always the record. This year I will be 57 and the record comes down a little to 12'9". I have jumped 12' in practice so I guess it isn't totally out of the question.
I saw Mike Cotton again at Gainesvile and he looks great. He swims to keep in shape. He is a humble giving man who understands the vault and uses his time helping to minister to athletes.
I ran into old friend Charlie Harris at the indoor meet, this year named for University of Florida coach and legend Jimmy Carnes. Charlie is still coaching at Lake Brantley HS in Orlando and still very involved with USATF at the highest levels. We had a nice time talking about the old days at Seminole Jr. College when we ran under Terry Long. Later Charlie followed Terry to Fla. State where he continued his triple jumping prowess.
I have been following Lacy Janson as she has been vaulting well indoors. Her grandparents live in Franklin, NC and her grandfather and family have been by my office for a visit last year. Also I was excited to see Steve Hooker threaten the WR 3 times already this year. I think it is just a matter of time before he surpasses Sergey Bubka.
I am continuing to pursue my involvement in the creation and development of the American Pole Vault Society. We have several leading American coaches and vaulters on board now and are working hard on the concept and generation of a website and annual meet and retreat.
Kip Dingler looked good at Florida beating me easily. His Daughter Carson will soon break every age group record from 8 years up. Oh yea, who's her coach? Charlie Polhamus. Can't forget to mention Ira Welborn who had 3 or 4 girls in the meet and continues to do a great job in the Jacksonville area as does Tom Wilson over at the High Flyers Club.
See you around this season,
Jerry Hock
